News from Europe - GFCT at EU Conference
Sue and I were lucky enough to secure two places at the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies conference entitled "Prostate Cancer Europe" in Brussels recently. The conference was attended by a broad church of expertise and from across the length and breadth of Europe with a wide range of expertise in all forms of Prostate Cancer diagnosis and treatment. We will be submitting our up to 800 word recommendation to the ICPS by the deadline of the 16th March for potential inclusion in the 'Government Gazette Health Report'. This will include the following 4 key areas as we see them:
- An increase in the number of PSA tests available to "informal and consenting" men, with particular reference to men over 45 with either Prostate or Breast Cancer in the family, and all men over 50.
- More use of 'second line' tests in the care of raised PSA scores such as Free to Total PSA and MRI Scans.
- More information being made available to GP's and other primary care providers to help identify more men at risk.
- More collaboration between all European Member States so that existing knowledge, new techniques and training opportunities can be freely shared.
In his summing up at the end of the conference, the Chair, Prof. Hendrik Van Poppel touched on the importance of "separating diagnosis from subsequent treatment". He also talked of the importance of MRI Scanning. We have already included a copy of the PROMIS trial regarding MRI scans on our website (
