PROSTATE CANCER NOW THE MOST COMMONLY DIAGNOSED CANCER IN ENGLAND!
On Monday 27th January it was announced by Public Health England that there were 49,029 men diagnosed with prostate cancer in England in 2018 - the highest ever recorded - with 7,828 MORE men diagnosed than in 2017 ( a staggering 19% increase).
Moreover, these figures relate to England ALONE..... if taken over the UK as a whole this figure will be well over 50,000!
Why this sudden spike? We've no doubt the "Fry/Turnbull Factor" is a major contributor. When Stephen Fry and Bill Turnbull went public about their respective diagnosis' it encouraged more men to get a PSA test with the resultant unavoidable outcome.
We've been involved in carrying out around 143,500 PSA tests on around 103,000 men over the past 15 years and have helped find 1892 cancers to date with the "red" letters sent out over the past 6 months still to be followed up.
We help find a cancer in around every 50 men tested and despite these alarming new figures we believe that far too many men over 50 are still denied a test by the NHS.
It is our belief that if EVERY man over 50 or over 40 if they are in high risk categories (family history of prostate or breast cancer or of Afro - Caribbean descent) was given a test today the diagnosis across the UK would move inexorably towards the 100,000 a year level. A truly frightening thought.
