NEW MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
MIS Healthcare in the UK are currently in the process of rolling out a new medical technology device to help men with the effects of radiation therapy, it is called Barrigel.
As we all know the effects of radiation therapy on men after prostate cancer treatment can be quite bad, Barrigel is a rectal spacer that is designed to offer more comfort to the patient and to help reduce the side effects of radiation therapy.
Barrigel are not the only spacer on the market, there is another one called ‘SpaceOAR’, both Spacers are essentially put in the same way i.e., like a prostate biopsy except they work in a different fashion.
Barrigel has been designed to put the spacing back in the hands of the clinician, this means the clinicians can use as much or a little as they need to provide the personalised spacing for each patient.
Barrigel is also the only spacer that is fully reversable, this means that should there be any issues with the placement issues, and it is causing the patient issues, Clinicians are able to remove it within a few minutes.
As we are now in unprecedented times with the COVID situation, Barrigel is perfectly adapted to deal with this. Barrigel deals with this by reabsorbing into the body after approximately 12 months, so should there be any issues or stoppages with treatment, patients are secure in the knowledge their spacing device will remain unchanged and will not require a new one fitting.
Barrigel is being rolled out to the NHS and Private Hospitals around the UK, we hope that in April 2021 that NHS England will extend the innovation program for rectal spacers and Barrigel will then be included in this program.
The patient brochure for the Barrigel product can be found in the downloads section on our website.
