Prebiopsy MRI Oncologically Safe for Suspected Prostate Cancer
A new prostate cancer research update from Practice Update:
Prebiopsy MRI Oncologically Safe for Suspected Prostate Cancer - https://www.practiceupdate.com/news/48462/2/1
This study found that it’s safe for men with suspected prostate cancer to skip a biopsy if their MRI results don’t show any signs of cancer. Researchers monitored these men for three years and found they didn’t have a higher risk of serious prostate cancer compared to those who had a biopsy right away.
The study involved 593 men, with nearly half having clear MRI results. Most of them avoided a biopsy initially, and some didn’t need one even after three years. For those whose MRI results suggested cancer, biopsies confirmed it in about 27-29% of cases. However, some with suspicious MRI results turned out not to have cancer after further testing.
This research helps fill gaps in current guidelines about using MRI to manage prostate cancer. The study was funded in part by companies involved in medical imaging and technology.
