A Call for Ethical Investments to Improve Prostate Cancer Treatment Accessibility 

For over 20 years, GFCT has led the way in advocating for early prostate cancer diagnosis and improved treatment options. Now, in a groundbreaking initiative, we are seeking to raise £1 million to finance the purchase of three High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) machines, ensuring that men outside London have access to this innovative and less invasive treatment for prostate cancer. 

Bridging the Gap in Prostate Cancer Treatment 

HIFU is a cutting-edge, minimally invasive treatment that precisely targets cancerous tissue in the prostate, significantly reducing the risk of life-changing side effects such as erectile dysfunction and incontinence. However, access to this treatment remains largely limited to the South of England, leaving thousands of eligible men without viable local options.

To address this disparity, GFCT is implementing a strategic plan to place HIFU machines in NHS hospitals across the UK on a rental basis. With one fully sponsored facility already being installed at Northampton General Hospital and units already operational in King’s Lynn and Bath, further expansion is planned for Leeds, Fife, and Plymouth/Truro. This will bring much-needed accessibility to men in the Midlands, East Anglia, and the Southwest.

The Growing Need for HIFU

With over 55,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer annually in the UK, around 12,000 could benefit from HIFU treatment each year. However, due to limited access, fewer than 1,000 men currently receive it—most in London. Increased awareness and availability of HIFU treatment could significantly improve patient outcomes, reducing complications associated with traditional surgery and radiotherapy.
