A team of friends from Lymm Rugby Club are preparing to cycle 250 miles this Easter in memory of their friend Liam, raising donations for The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust and raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Liam’s Story
Liam, a beloved figure in the rugby community, passed away on 14th January 2024 at the age of 60 after a battle with prostate cancer. Liam had no symptoms before his diagnosis. At 55 years old, what began as treatment for back pain led to a stage 4 diagnosis, and the cancer had already spread to his spine, hips, and thighs.
In honour of Liam's memory, a team of Liam’s friends, including his brother Mark, are riding from Lymm RFC, where Liam was a stalwart player for over 30 years, to Limerick, the birthplace of his parents and home to Munster Rugby—the team Liam passionately supported. From the age of 15 to 45, Liam rarely missed a game at Lymm RFC, earning him second place in the club’s all-time senior team appearance table. And for over two decades, Liam would travel with his brothers to Thomond Park to cheer on his beloved Munster team, catch up with extended family, and of course enjoy “the odd pint of the black stuff” as his friends quoted!
Raising Awareness for Prostate Cancer & Early Diagnosis
Funds raised through this ride will go directly to us at The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust. For over 20 years, GFCT has been working to promote early detection of prostate cancer through PSA testing, detecting over 3000 cases of cancer so far which may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
GFCT was set up by Graham Fulford to promote awareness of prostate cancer following the diagnosis of a close friend who died at the age of 58 and a close family member who died in 2007 from prostate cancer after a valiant fight. We offer PSA testing events all over the UK where anyone can register online, attend an event near them, and get a simple blood test to find out their PSA level. The PSA test is a good indicator of prostate issues such as prostate cancer and is an accessible option to check your prostate and get an early diagnosis. We are also working on other exciting projects in the advancement of prostate cancer testing and treatment.
