Ambassadors Needed! Helping Rural Communities Overcome Health Inequalities
At GFCT, we are looking to recruit ambassadors in rural counties to help run health testing events in the community.
Did you know that 40% of adults are falling outside normal ranges on their health tests?* Early detection is key to getting the best possible treatment for your health concerns, before it's too late. Which is why we want to make health testing events accessible to all.
Graham Fulford MBE who founded GFCT said, "Whilst we're still primarily a charity aimed at creating prostate cancer awareness and early diagnosis, we're getting more involved in general health testing in these very challenging times in all parts of the health sector".
He went on to say "Whilst we're very proud of the fact that working with other likeminded people we've been involved in carrying out over 320,000 PSA tests leading to over 3,200 cancer finds all over the country, we're also proud that by offering simple checks like cholesterol levels, we can help give advice to people to make the often subtle lifestyle changes that can improve their long term quality of life. In over 3,000 cholesterol checks for men and over 500 for women to date we've found over 80% are above recommended healthy levels based on NHS advice.
We've tested regularly in Cornwall for the last 10 years or so under the brilliant leadership of Wendy Symons whose roots are firmly in the farming and rural communities. She's been a real inspiration to us all and is now starting to receive some personally very rewarding thank you letters from people whose lives she's helped save. More importantly she's very happy to help us expand our outreach work into more rural communities, who I believe are under more pressure and facing more challenges than ever.
GFCT will make a monthly contribution towards any new ambassadors day to day overheads and a fee for helping to organise and run testing events in rural communities. We aim to attract around 60 attendees upwards at each event to help cover the overheads of running them. Wendy is very happy to have a preliminary chat with anyone who may be interested. She can be contacted by email at wendysymons@psatests.org.uk."
