Celebrating Men’s Health Month with GFCT
June is Men’s Health Month, bringing global focus to the importance of preventive care, healthy habits, and early detection - especially for prostate cancer, which remains a leading cancer in men. Early diagnosis dramatically boosts survival, with a 5‑year survival rate of about 99% when caught early.
What GFCT Offers in PSA Testing
Since 2004, The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT) has been bringing early prostate cancer detection directly into communities. Our age-adjusted “traffic light” model categorises PSA test results into:
-
Green: Low risk
-
Amber: Intermediate risk
- Red: High risk
A recent University of Manchester study, using data from over 50,000 community tests, showed men flagged in the red group were more than 15× more likely to have clinically significant prostate cancer. This demonstrates how indicative our scoring system is.
Types of PSA Tests: Standard vs Advanced
- Basic PSA test: a simple blood test for men over 40, measuring total PSA, with age-specific thresholds and automatic free‑to‑total PSA ratio evaluation to improve accuracy.
- Advanced testing: for those with raised PSA, there are five advanced biomarker tests - Stockholm3, Proclarix, EpiSwitch, Randox and Prostatype. These refine risk assessment and help avoid unnecessary biopsies.
Community Testing Events
GFCT holds public testing events nationwide, such as upcoming sessions on 26th June in Torpoint and 28th June in Bromsgrove. Booking is easy online - no symptoms needed to participate. Find a testing event near you here. Home testing kits are also available here for flexibility. Create a free account to book your test.
Research & Impact
- University of Manchester study (May 2025): Please check out our recent paper which confirms the effectiveness of GFCT’s community PSA testing model, underlining the need for accessible early detection.
- Ongoing initiatives: GFCT supports research into national screening, prostate health treatments like HIFU, and clinical referral pathways. Check out our latest initiative to expand access to diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer here.
Why It Matters This June
- Men often delay healthcare; only 60% have annual checkups, and 40% wait until they feel unwell.
- Awareness around public figures like Chris Hoy, diagnosed with prostate cancer at 47 years old, has refocused attention on proactive prostate care.
- Community testing alongside annual screenings can save lives, reduce invasive diagnostics, and improve peace of mind.
What You Can Do
- Take action this month: book a GFCT PSA test through a local event or home kit.

- Support the mission: help fund community testing and PSA awareness by donating here or enquire about organising your own event here.
Final Word
Men’s Health Month reminds us that knowledge + accessible testing = better outcomes. GFCT is proud to lead through widely available, evidence-based PSA testing, empowering men to take control of their health. Whether you're 40 or 80, with symptoms or none, a simple PSA test could be life‑saving.
